The foundation of Can Culleretes goes back to century XVIII, concretely to year 1786. There are two versions about the origin of the name. According to first one, when they began to use metal teaspoons they used many of them, because they were needed to eat the house’s specialties —Catalan cream, curd, chocolate... It seems to be that in the restaurant they did not have enough metal teaspoons. Then, whenever the waiter approached the bar, he shouted: "Girls, culleretes". The other version —less probable— explains that the name of the restaurant is due to the fact that Can Culleretes was the first restaurant of Barcelona that used metal teaspoons instead of those of wood.
The grandmother of Joaquim Pujol settled down in the site of Can Culleretes in 1786 and created a pastry shop where she sold candies like custard, cream, orgeat, chocolate and menjar blanc. Towards 1890 that crémerie was bought by Tito Regás, great-grandfather of Oriol Regás, who turned it into a restaurant. Tito Regás placed three great mural paintings of Francisco Tey, six plaques of ceramics of Xavier Nogués and great lamps.
